We as Orthodox Christians believe ‘God is Love.’ (1 John 4:8) The very source and definition of love. The saints were a witness to this love in the world: St Charalambos (89-202) whom we commemorate today, ‘glowing with joy’ in persecution and trials radiated Christ’s love to those around him, transforming the lives of men and women through his exemplary endurance and witness.
As young people today we constantly find ourselves witnesses of injustice. This could be physical or cyber bullying, gossip, exploitation or discrimination. In our schools, universities or workplaces it is easy to take a passive approach to such situations: not getting involved or interested in the difficulties or ungodly treatment of others.
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt 25:40) Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matt 5:9)
A passive approach lacks courage, faith and consequently love. Let us then be courageous, prayerful witnesses to Christ’s righteousness standing against any distortion or exploitation of the ‘image of God’ (Gen 1:27) respecting the freedom and uniqueness of all. Based on Pauline teaching (1 Cor 9:22-23) Saint Sophrony of Essex tells us: ‘Love is when one becomes everything to all men, when he behaves sincerely with those whom he meets and with whom he lives, when he has no desire to impose his own will but accepts the will of others as his own.’
Η αγάπη προς τον αδελφό καλλιεργεί την αγάπη προς τον Θεό. Είμαστε ευτυχισμένοι, όταν αγαπήσουμε όλους τους ανθρώπους μυστικά. Θα νιώθουμε τότε ότι όλοι μάς αγαπούν. Κανείς δεν μπορεί να φθάσει στον Θεό, αν δεν περάσει απ’ τους ανθρώπους. Γιατί, “ὁ μή ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ, ὅν ἑώρακε, τόν Θεόν, ὅν οὐχ ἑώρακε, πῶς δύναται ἀγαπᾶν;“. Να αγαπάμε, να θυσιαζόμαστε για όλους ανιδιοτελώς, χωρίς να ζητάμε ανταπόδοση. Τότε ισορροπεί ο άνθρωπος. Μια αγάπη που ζητάει ανταπόδοση είναι ιδιοτελής. Δεν είναι γνήσια, καθαρή, ακραιφνής.
Να τους αγαπάτε και να τους συμπονάτε όλους. “Καί εἴτε πάσχει ἕν μέλος, συμπάσχει πάντα τά μέλη· ὑμείς δέ ἐστε μέλη Χριστοῦ καί μέλη ἐκ μέρους”. Αυτό είναι Εκκλησία· εγώ, εσύ, αυτός, ο άλλος να αισθανόμαστε ότι είμαστε μέλη Χριστού, ότι είμαστε ένα. Η φιλαυτία είναι εγωισμός. Να μη ζητάμε, “εγώ να σταθώ, εγώ να πάω στον Παράδεισο“, αλλά να νιώθουμε για όλους αυτή την αγάπη…Αυτό είναι ταπείνωση. – Άγιος Πορφύριος
