Germanos Strenopoulos (1872-1951) was born in Bithynia in a
modest Greek family. He studied at the Halki Institute of Theology, studies
that he complete in Leipzig, in Strasbourg and in other scholarly centers.
From 1904 to1922, Germanos was the rector of Halki, and he contributed, in this
way, to the formation of the elite of the Greek hierarchy. Ecumenical Patriarch
Meletios (Metaxakis) made Germanos his apocrisary to the Archdiocese of
Canterbury, at the same time that he was charged, with the title of patriarchal
exarch, with the spiritual care of the Greek communities of Central and Western Europe. An ecumenical personality, His Eminence
Germanos was at Lausanne, Stockholm and in all the pan-Christian
conferences the most listened to representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
