The School of Byzantine Music

The School of Byzantine Music was founded in London by Fr. Joseph Paliouras in 1986.

The School is governed by a committee appointed by His Eminence the Archbishop of Thyateira Nikitas, and operates with his blessing and guidance.

Our School is the only institution in Europe organized to give an Official Cantors Degree and a Teacher of Byzantine Music Degree.

The School currently operates Monday to Friday 5-9pm, in a building provided by The Greek Orthodox Community of St Barnabas in North London.

We have 10 branches in our Greek Orthodox Communities in London but also in cities such as Birmingham and Brighton.

Our School is attended by 80-90 students every year. They attend Byzantine music, theory and practice, Byzantine music practice, Functional and Formal Church lessons, European music and instruments.

Attendance is for five years with additional years for the Cantors Degree and Teachers Degree.

To date, our school has enrolled more than 600 students. The aim of the School was, and is, to provide Cantors for our Churches and to train teachers. We have succeeded in both.

Along with the lessons, the students and teachers participate in both our Byzantine and Traditional Choirs. The aim of both choirs is to promote Byzantine and Traditional music. They also participate in official events of our Holy Archdiocese well as Community events.
